Break and Treat control method for rhododendron saplings

In recent times in Killarney National Park we have been using a control method for rhododendron saplings up to 2 cms. in diameter. This method eliminates foliar spraying which can result in damage to surrounding native vegetation and plant pulling which causes soil disturbance and plant breakage, resulting in regrowth from broken stems. .

Treated sapling with no damage to native vegetation

Break rhododendron plants as low to the ground as possible by hand without breaking off stems. Immediately treat break with a 13% herbicide solution using marking dye in solution to indicate treated stems. Use hand held sprayer on low pressure to avoid damage to surrounding native vegetation.
