HOW TO OBTAIN A CANOE PERMIT FOR KILLARNEY

NATIONAL PARK

Please note that in order to use a kayak or canoe within Killarney National Park, you must obtain a permit in advance.  Permits may be collected from the Ranger Base, Killarney National Park.

The Ranger Base is located on the N71, approximately 200m before the entrance gate to Muckross House.  It is on the left hand side of the road as you approach from the direction of Killarney town, and is the last building on the left before the entrance gate to Muckross House (which is on the right hand side of the road).  The Ranger Base is at the front of the building – ring the doorbell beside the front door for attention.

The procedure for obtaining a permit is as follows:

  1. Please ring the Ranger Base (00353 64 6635215 between 0900 and 1700 hours) well in advance  of your visit – ideally the day before at the latest – to arrange a suitable time when there will be a Ranger present to issue you with a permit.
  2. Before calling to collect the permit, you must have the canoe/kayak power-washed at a petrol station / garage, and bring the receipt for the power-washing with you as proof that you have washed it. The nearest garage is Hegarty’s Spar, on the Muckross Road a short distance beyond the Gleneagle Hotel (coming from Killarney town).

We can then issue you with a permit.  There is no charge for the permit (apart from the cost of the power-washing). Please note that the permit is only valid for the date(s) specified on the permit form by the Ranger who issues it.
